In Cloutier v. Costco Wholesale Corp., 390 F.3d 126 (1st Cir. 2004), the court reviewed cases from various jurisdictions for the proposition that an employer can insist upon certain personal grooming standards (including no facial hair and no jewelry) where those standards are promulgated out of concern for the company's professional image or out of concerns for employee safety -- as long as the personal grooming standards are not directed at religion.
